Yesterday’s Stream: Creating Music in Real Time

Yesterday’s studio session brought something unexpected. Broadcasting simultaneously on YouTube and Bandcamp whilst recording completely new tracks created this unique energy where creative work became shared experience.

The songs we captured don’t exist anywhere else yet, which made everyone watching genuine first listeners. There’s something vulnerable about letting people hear material before it’s fully formed, but that vulnerability proved valuable. Questions from viewers during breaks helped clarify creative decisions I was making subconsciously.

My producer and I worked through three tracks that have been floating around in demo form for weeks. Hearing them take shape in the studio environment, with real-time feedback from both platforms, pushed us toward choices we might not have made in private sessions. The YouTube chat moved quickly with broader reactions, whilst Bandcamp comments tended toward deeper musical discussion.

One song in particular transformed completely during recording. What started as a quiet acoustic piece developed electronic elements and different vocal approaches based partly on the creative conversation happening with viewers. Sometimes external perspective reveals possibilities you can’t see from inside the work.

The technical side ran smoothly across both platforms, which allowed focus to remain on the music rather than streaming logistics. The afternoon timing felt right for this kind of exploratory work without the pressure of evening performance energy.

Thank you to everyone who joined on both YouTube and Bandcamp. Your presence turned routine recording work into collaborative creation. The questions, suggestions, and encouragement made genuine difference to how the songs developed.

Planning more of these dual-platform sessions. The format works.
